Boot sale bounty

I did the unthinkable this morning. My alarm went off at 6 and I went back to sleep. We had a disturbed night thanks to the teenagers next door and I just could not function.
I eventually got to the boot sale at 10.30 which is VERY late for me. The sun shone a bit but it was freezing.

Want to see what I found?
A very old childrens book with beautiful colour illustrations...

I'm tempted to cut it up...is that dreadful?

Yet another vintage chopping board. I cannot resist...

I love all the cuts in the wood...

This curiously shaped wicker basket? It will be given a paint treatment and possibly wall mounted somewhere.

And last of all this ugly table...

Not old, but very sturdy...

I'm seeing it with a padded top and painted legs as a bedroom bench...

rather like this? Obviously it will make the master bedroom every bit as glamourous as this one. I feel a trip to Dunelm Mill coming on, in a quest for foam...

And who has nicked the dolls bed today?

Fat Freddy. And he wants you all to know he's got plenty of room and he does not appreciate my rude comments about his weight!

Enjoy the bank holiday!

  1. Brilliant finds, you still did well even though you got there late. I wouldn't be brave enough to cut up the lovely illustrations but knowing you you'll make something fab with them. Look forward to seeing the table transformation.

  2. Great finds, its still snowy and cold here so I doubt there would have been any boot sales on. I dont think I would have got up at six either!

  3. Oh dear, is Freddy a sensitive soul? Tell him my cat Minnie, affectionately known as Big Fat Min-ball, has every sympathy regarding the name-calling of humans. (She doubtless has some choices insults for us, on the quiet...)
Good carboot finds, I can imagine the table/bench will look pretty once you have worked your magic, Emma Kate! I always wince a little at the thought of cutting up books, but I also think that if the book is in poor condition, it seems less of a crime... And if the lovely illustrations wouldn't be seen in book form, it's justifiable to use them for something where they can be admired. Let us know what you decide! xxxx

  4. I always seem to do better when I'm late to a boot sale, too. Mind you, it's been so long I've probably forgotten how to shop!
Freddy is gorgeous and a bit of extra weight makes him all the more distinguished. I bet he'll love your bench when it's all painted and upholstered, more room for movement than a cot! x

  5. I'm a happy Easter bunny as I went to my first boot sale today! I didn't get much apart from a few clothes destined for Ebay, and a plastic storage unit for my craft materials. I'm hoping to go to one tomorrow, do you know of any boot sales happening on bank holiday monday? There's one at Billington which can be quite good but wouldn't mind fitting in two! Love the book, yes I'd cut it up and give it a new lease of life. Great idea for the table.

    1. I don't know of any round here, they're all on saturdays and Sundays. I reckon the earliest ones of the year are the best and it's the same old dirge every week after that. But perhaps it's too cold for the early ones to be good yet?

  6. That table is going to look brilliant as a bench! Bless Fat Freddie- I feel his pain, as I've eaten far too many of the Easter Bunny's tasty gifts :)

    Happy Easter!

  7. Hi Emma

Lovin' your finds, that book is gorgeous, I don't think I could bring myself to cut it up. The table/bench will look every bit as gorgeous as the one you showed. Can I ask you a question though? Do Dunelm Mills sell foam cut to size, as I need some for a project I'm doing, but didn't know where to go for it, and our Dunelm is quite a distance, so I didn't want to waste time visiting if they only sell stock sizes?

    Happy Easter

    1. Hi Judi, They won't cut it to size but they do large pieces that you can either cut with a bread knife or an electric carving knife. We have a local curtain shop that sells it cut to size so perhaps you have the same? You get a rougher edge doing it yourself but you should allways cover it in wadding before your chosen fabric anyway and then you can't tell.
      Dunelm also do mail order...

  8. I wouldn't normally say it but yes, cut the book up - it would be great to use for decoupage.

    1. I think so too! Probably because the illustrations are totally reminiscent of those victorian paper scraps!

  10. Ooh that wicker basket is interesting. I cant for the life of me work out what it was made for, but i'd love to know. You have such a vision for things. I wouldnt have looked at that table in a million years and yet id love a padded bench such as your planning. Car boot sales are a different entity here in nz, rare and small, but i still remember the mingled excitement and reluctance of a cold car bootin morning in england!
Thanks for linking, have a great week x

    1. I wonder if it's for magazines? I've hung it on the inside of the pantry door as a home for packets of gravy! It would fit several bottles but the door is hollow so it won't take the weight! x

  12. Oh I love fat Freddy!:) We like to call it fluffiness though. That way our cats do not get as offended!;) Love your finds and cant wait to see your table transformation. It will prefect for a bench like that! Thanx for partying at my place.

    1. I couldn't believe my luck when I googled images of bedroom benches and that one is so similar to the bones of mine! Thank you Pamela!

  13. Yes, that table is definitely a bench-in-waiting. I usually scan my vintage books and use copies in projects. That way I have a continuous source. Fat Freddie appears to be a pleasantly plump companion.
